Dental crowns explained: when you might need one and what is involved

A dental crown is a cap that fits over a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. A dentist may recommend one when a tooth is badly worn, cracked, heavily filled or has had root canal treatment, and the tooth needs extra protection.

When might a crown be recommended?

Your dentist will consider a crown when a filling alone is unlikely to protect the tooth.

  • A large filling is replacing most of the tooth
  • A tooth is cracked or weakened
  • A tooth has had root canal treatment
  • A tooth is worn or misshapen
  • A crown is needed to support a bridge

What does getting a crown involve?

The process varies, but it commonly follows these steps.

  1. Assessment and X-rays, and a discussion of options and costs.
  2. The tooth is prepared and an impression or scan is taken.
  3. A temporary crown protects the tooth while the permanent crown is made.
  4. The permanent crown is checked, adjusted and fitted.

How do I look after a crown?

Brush and clean between your teeth as usual, paying attention to the gumline around the crown. Avoid chewing very hard objects, and keep regular check-ups so your dentist can monitor the crown and the tooth beneath it.

What if a crown comes loose?

Keep the crown safe, avoid chewing on that tooth and contact your dentist. Do not use household glue to reattach it.
